I got the opportunity to see Welles live for the second time yesterday. Their live show completely blows me away. This band is rock in the greatest sense of the word. Although I love their debut album “Red Trees and White Trashes”, the album just doesn’t seem to do the band justice. They are a band that you really need to see live to get why they are so good.
As I was watching them play, all of the reasons of why I like this band so much were running through my mind. First of all, everyone in the band really plays their instruments well. It is sad that this is such a rarity, but watching them play and jam out was fun just because of how well they can actually play. I like that everyone in the band sings, even the drummer. Besides the lead singer, Jesse, it is all just back up vocals that they are singing, but none the less, I always love to see a drummer with a mic stand at his kit chiming in every once in a while.
The thing that sticks out to me the most about Welles is that they have their own sound. They have their own thing going on musically that is completely unique to what anyone else is doing. They have their own identity. You don’t see them live and then say ‘yeah they are good, they remind me of this band’. There is no one else to compare them with because they have their own sound going on and when you see them live that sound really comes together. The vocals, the guitar jams in their songs and their sound perfectly to form something that I absolutely love.
That being said, this band is completely underrated for now, but I can guarantee their fan base will continue to build up as these guys have got what it takes to make it big in the rock scene. It is going to be amazing to watch the world catch on to Welles and I am so happy to be along for the ride with these guys. Be sure to catch these guys on tour!
