Hidden in the upstairs of a bookstore in Ithica, New York is a Star Trek inspired 100% vegan cafe, called Ten Forward Cafe. I took a road trip out to Ithica to see Julien Baker live and when searching for vegan options in the area I came across this cafe and it is the only vegan one in the area so I decided to give it a try.
First of all, if I didn’t do my research beforehand I feel like I may have never found the cafe as it is tucked away in the second story of Autumn Leaves Books in the Ithica commons and the signage out front wasn’t very prominent. I must say that I am happy that I was able to find this hidden gem as the food was really good.
I ordered the space garbage nachos which were tortilla chips topped with barbecue soy curls, mac and cheese – with a delicious homemade cheese sauce, coleslaw and salsa. What sounded like an odd combination of foods was actually really tasty and also very filling.
I also ordered a breakfast sandwich that I had to take to go because I was so full from the nachos, but having it reheated in the toaster oven the next day it was still so good. I wish I had ordered two of them! The breakfast sandwich was made of housemade veggie sausage, Susie’s bac-un seitan on a toasted english muffin with a secret sauce, tomato and melty daiya cheese.
Ten Forward Cafe also serves a variety of sandwiches, wraps, salads and shakes. I wish I was able to try more when I was there but it was just a quick trip. I will definitely be stopping back next time I’m in the Ithica area.
