I was driving down to Pittsburgh today for a show and sometimes I just want a cheeseburger, french fries and a milkshake. Pittsburgh is a city that can offer this comfort food option to both the vegan and non vegan crowd. When trying to stick to only eating foods that come from plants, it isn’t always easy to find these kind of options so a stop at Burgatory was a must for me today. This place really hit the spot. It was everything I hoped it would be.
As far as sticking to vegan options goes, Burgatory has a decent menu selection. They have a number of different burger selections and you can substitute in a vegan burger and vegan cheese into any burger on the menu, or you can choose to build your own burger. When choosing to create your own burger, you just fill out their custom menu selection sheet where you pick the type of burger, bun, cheese, toppings and side for your meal.
Their are two different vegan burgers that you can choose from – the impossible burger or their homemade vegan veggie patty. If you want to go for the choice that will actually make you think you are eating a beef hamburger then go for the impossible burger! I actually got the vegan veggie patty because I’ve had the impossible burger many places before and wanted to switch it up. The vegan veggie patty is like most other house made veggie burgers, they kind of fall apart a bit and don’t have the consistency of actual meat, but it was still tasty none the less.
On my burger I got the vegan cheddar cheese and just the usual classic toppings of lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup and mustard. I upgraded to fries on the side for an extra $1.50 instead of having the house made potato chips. Next time I would just stick to the chips because looking around at what other people were ordering, the chips looked so good!
Burgatory also offers a variety of dairy free milkshakes and I was actually really, really impressed with my strawberry milkshake. It was think and creamy and had chunks of strawberries in it. A lot of time vegan milkshakes are not so good. The consistency is never right when I get them at restaurants. They are usually too thin and milk-like instead of the nice think consistency. A vegan milkshake is a must at Burgatory. You will be blown away by it.
Burgatory definitely knows what they are doing when it comes to vegan food. They are able to satisfy your needs when you want the comfort of a cheeseburger and a milkshake. Well done, Burgatory!
